1. They have very little water! Bottled products require water for many reasons—the most obvious is to help you get the product out of the bottle! Our bars don’t contain hardly ANY water at all. This means they are pure, nourishing, strong ingredients to deliver a big impact in a small punch.
2. They last forever! Ok, that’s a logical stretch, but these bars do last a long time, as so little is required to do the job. That’s why ours are smaller than other shops make. Do you want to be stuck with the same fragrance or color for 6-8 months? Or do you want to refresh your supply with tantalizing new offerings? Plus, smaller bars hit the pocketbook softer than the bigger ones.
3. They are easy to travel with! If you travel a lot, these are for you! There’s no risk of them tipping over, or having the cap come undone in your suitcase. They are also TSA-friendly, because they aren’t a liquid!
4. Unlike our soap bars, our shampoo and conditioner bars are not made with lye. Some shampoo bars do. Lye results in a higher pH in the final bar, which can create a harsh cleansing action for some hair types. Our bars are much lower pH, resulting in a very gentle clean.
5. They are easy to use! Whether you choose to rub them on your hands to generate a lather, or choose to run the bar against your scalp, directly on your hair--well, that's up to you. We prefer the latter. Swipe, swipe, work it in! Do you need a third swipe? No problem! Just be careful how much conditioner you choose to use. More on that below.
1. Always store your shampoo and conditioner bars in a dry place! Just like our artisan soap offerings, if your bars sit in water, they will soften and be used much too quickly.
2. Use as little as necessary. If you’re coming from bottled product, you have an idea of how much that takes to get the results you want. But solid bars are different—remember, no water!
3. No, seriously, it doesn’t take much! It takes a little time to wrap your mind around how little you actually need to get your hair clean and refreshed, compared to a bottled product. When we first started with conditioner bars, we overdid it every time! You will find your happy medium, but be prepared to experiment and adjust.
4. There shouldn’t be an adjustment period with our bars, but every scalp is different. Your sebrum levels—the oily substance produced by your scalp—should adjust quickly to our bars. If takes longer, stay with it. Give your sebrum a chance to adapt.
5. If the foam seems colored as the bar, don’t worry. The micas we use as colorants for our bars can not stain skin, nor can they alter your hair color. Micas are merely a naturally-occurring mineral that give our products color. They do not contain the chemistry within them to color your hair.
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is our first ingredient. It comes in many forms—powder, beads, and noodles. We use noodles for a unique textured finish that polishes the hair shaft in our shampoo. That’s what gives it the rough, rice texture. This main ingredient is a mild surfactant made from coconut oil. It has a very gentle ph level, making it appropriate to those with sensitive skin. It’s best known for creating a rich, plentiful lather that grabs and suspends oil and dirt from your scalp and hair shaft, allowing it to be washed away gently in the rinse.
Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Salt, Glycerin combine to make a product also derived from coconut oil. Together, their chemistry creates a strong humectant, drawing in and locking moisture. It also adds to the luxurious bubbles, additionally helping carry contaminants away from your hair and down the drain.
BTMS-50 is an emulsifying conditioner, helping keep our ingredients combined and stable. It also has a slight waxy feel, helping to smooth hair.
Cetyl Alcohol may not be what you think it is. It is a fatty alcohol that has emollient properties. It’s used as an conditioning emulsifier that gives a silky feel without adding extra weight to your hair.
Phenoxyethanol +CG, commercially known as Optiphen, is a preservative that prevents mold, yeast, and bacteria growth. It is widely used in the cosmetics industry.
Sodium Lactate is a salt source from the processing and fermentation of sugars found in corn and beets. It’s primary use in our bars is to help the bar firm up in the mold, so it can be removed with as little damage as possible.
Water-Soluble Green Tea Extract provides excellent moisturizing properties.
Caprylyl Glycol is a conditioning agent sourced from coconut. It is used as a preservative, as it has some antibacterial properties.
You may know Panthenol as Pro-Vitamin B5. This ingredient further moisturizes, and delivers a beautiful shine to hair.
